Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH (RWM) is part of Rheinmetall Defence AG. The product portfolio of RWM includes weapon systems and ammunition for infantry, direct and indirect fire, as well as pyrotechnics and protection systems. RWM specialises in the development and production of large calibre weapon systems and ammunition.

NIOA is a subsidiary of the NIOA Group of companies. NIOA is a 100 per cent Australian owned, private enterprise. Established in 1973, the company has grown to become Australia’s global firearms, weapons and munitions company. NIOA specialises in the provision and support of weapons and munitions to the Defence, Law Enforcement and commercial markets. The company also has a key role in delivering munitions for the Australian Defence Force and allied nations through its manufacturing operations at the Government Owned Contractor Operated (GOCO) Benalla munitions facility in Victoria, Australia.

Rheinmetall NIOA Munitions

WORLD CLASS MUNITIONS MANUFACTURING FACILITY

RNM has constructed and commissioned a munitions forging facility to forge and finish large calibre projectile shells for 155mm artillery munitions, and metal parts for other munition-related products (eg. mortar shell bodies).

Situated on a 233,300 square metre site in Maryborough, Queensland, the facility covers an area of 40,000 square metres with room for future expansion. The factory utilises state-of-the-art technology, precision machinery and advanced manufacturing processes. This includes robotic handling and automation, strict controls for product tolerances, 100 per cent quality control for key manufacturing parameters, product traceability throughout manufacturing, environmentally conscious processes for lubrication and quenching, and advanced forging and heat treatment techniques.

The plant includes pre-built capability growth areas designed to add capacity for future advances in projectiles and metal parts for munitions. Manufacturing operations include forging, machining, nosing, heat-treating, welding, phosphating and painting, as well as extensive quality controls and assurance, including destructive and non-destructive testing.

NIOA Medium Calibre Munitions Facility

BENALLA, VICTORIA

RNM has invested in medium calibre ammunition manufacturing capability at the NIOA tenancy at Defence’s Benalla munitions facility focused on delivering products to the domestic and global export markets. The medium calibre ammunition program has significant potential for export of product to the US for the Joint Strike Fighter program and other aircraft and maritime ammunition into Southeast Asia. RNM is a secondary source supplier to the US Government for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program.

Our specialist workforce continues to grow and includes a range of technical engineering staff and experienced manufacturing and production professionals. Most of our staff are locally employed and include operational production people, team leaders and supervisors, maintenance, skilled technicians, operators, labourers and apprentices. We pride ourselves on our ever-expanding internal training processes and development pathways to master the unique skillset of world-class munition manufacturing capability.
